Cover crops are widely used in vineyards for their ability to improve infiltration of winter rainwater and reduce soil erosion. But how much water does the cover crop consume in the process? Join the Vineyard Team Technical Program and Cal Poly collaborators for a tailgate focused on selection of cover crops to capture and conserve valuable winter rainwater at one of five demonstration sites in the Paso Robles area. Participants will view a cover crop variety evaluation planted in a replicated plot and learn how cover crops are selected to aid infiltration of winter rainwater. The consumption of stored water is being evaluated for each cover crop species, as are various techniques and timing to suppress or eliminate cover crops to maximize water retention in the soil.

Barn Owl Box Safety & Management will highlight bird diversity and reproductive success, birds as beneficials, proper placement and bird use of roosting and nesting boxes, and the value of maintaining individual oak trees for wildlife in Central Coast vineyards. One owl box per member will be provided courtesy of PG&E. Members must be present to receive complimentary owl box. Please register for owl boxes ON SITE
